Lisa Wood, a San Francisco artist, has a sense of humor. She finds inspiration in nature, and has put real bugs under glass in humorous ways.
“Just imagine what a bunch of bugs would be doing if they weren’t being watched, and then put that under a glass dome,” she says. Wood’s art features insects in unlikely and humanistic settings, such as a beetle clipping articles out of newspaper or a caterpillar decorating a wedding cake.
Wood says she has always used nature into her artwork, but never used real insects until she began making insect dioramas. She says, “It was the first time I had used real insects in my work, and I was hooked. Insects are amazing little creatures.”
The insects Wood uses in her artwork come from a warehouse near Los Angeles that sells dried insects and other equipment and supplies for “entomology and related sciences. Wood says she picks the insects that are big and sturdy enough or “cute enough” for her displays.
