Both Eastern subterranean termites and arid-land subterranean termites require regular contact with soil in order to survive.
Both of these termites live and travel through mud tubes. These mud tubes allow termites to travel and search for food without exposure to the open air. These mud tubes can be around your foundation, windows, wall studs, and siding.
Drywood termites, on the other hand, do not need contact with the soil. This makes any wood source above ground vulnerable to a drywood termite infestation.
