Types of Termites in Albuquerque

Termites are a common pest problem year-round here in New Mexico. Our wam climate draws abundant termite activity throughout the year. There are just three termites that are most common in our area, including:

Eastern Subterranean Termites. These termites are the most common in North America, and also cost property owners the most money from the damage they cause. They are typically smaller than drywood termites and need contact with the soil to survive. A major sign of these termites is noticing mud tubes.
Arid-land Subterranean Termites. Found in regions that experience a lot of sunshine with little moisture, arid-land subterranean termites are typically less damaging than eastern subterranean termites. They are commonly found in sand dunes, and swarm during June and July.
Drywood Termites.Drywood termites are not as destructive as subterranean termites in Albuquerque, but can cause substantial damage. Colonies live entirely within dry, sound wood and require no external source of moisture. Signs of an infestation generally include clicking sounds coming from walls, discarded wings, feces, or frass (piles of sawdust created from their feeding).
