Out of all pests, spiders are likely the most feared. Although they arenโt destructive and rarely dangerous, they are certainly frightening to many people. Most spiders you come across are completely harmless. In fact, spiders help to reduce insect populations inside your home!
That said, there are two spiders in New Mexico that can be harmful: the black widow and the brown recluse spider. If either of these are in or near your home, itโs always recommended to call a professional spider exterminator.

What Dangerous Spiders are in New Mexico?
All types of spiders are venomous in that venom that is used to paralyze and kill other insects they prey upon. The good news is that the venom from your typical house spider wonโt cause any serious symptoms. A bite from a black widow or brown recluse can be much more dangerous, which is why itโs so important to be able to identify them:
- Black widows: Female black widows can be easily recognized by the red hourglass on the underside of the abdomen.
- Brown recluse spiders: The brown recluse spider can be identified by the darker brown hourglass on its back.
Outdoor Spiders vs. House Spiders
Everyone knows that seeing a spider or two is completely normal, even in the comfort of your home. Thankfully, these house spiders are almost always harmless! In fact, indoor spiders will help keep the insect population inside your home under control and will avoid contact with you. As mentioned above, the spiders to be wary of are black widows and brown recluse spiders, who may come indoors in search of food or shelter.
