Termites and burrowing ants may lead to the discovery of gold. A new study in West Australia’s goldfields has found that termite mounds contain high concentrations of gold, and that larger deposits of gold are present underneath the mounds. Scientists believe the insects could provide a new, cost effective and environmentally friendly way of exploring for new mineral deposits. The traditional method of drilling is both expensive and often inaccurate.
According to Dr Aaron Stewart, an entomologist for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) which conducted the study, “These resources are becoming increasingly hard to find because much of the Australian landscape is covered by a layer of eroded material that masks what’s going on deeper underground.”
Dr. Stewart’s work has also found that insects carry metals in their bodies. For the full report on how termites and ants may help locate gold deposits, please visit Science Daily.
While Pest Defense Services probably can’t help you find gold, we can help you with any unwanted pests, including termites and ants. Termites are often not identified until considerable damage has occurred, so it is important to contact a pest control specialist immediately if you see evidence of their presence. The most obvious sign of subterranean termites are the mud tunnels they crease when they go above ground for food. Signs of termites inside homes usually looks like water damage including stains, buckling wood, swollen floors and ceilings, visible mazes with walls or furniture and a scent similar to mildew or mold.
