Resurgence in bed bug infestations has made these insects not only frequent front page news but a focus of both private and public research. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s weekly Science Blog recently featured the latest research and strategy from its Agricultural Research Service (ARS) aimed at bringing bed bug outbreaks under control.
The ARS has focused attention on bed bugs due to the increase of infestations over the past decade. While the ARS does not believe bed bugs transmit diseases, they have found that some people have severe allergic reactions to the bugs. The insects are difficult to detect due to their small size until a large infestation is underway, and as a result, often expensive to eradicate.
Bedbugs are a common problem throughout the United States, including New Mexico. We see two or three cases of bedbugs in Albuquerque every week. If you find evidence of bed bugs, it is best to seek the advice of a pest control expert.
