Cockroaches are probably on most people’s list of least favorite insects. They are highly adaptable and difficult to eliminate when you have an infestation. Still, they are also fascinating and have highly unusual abilities that we can admire, hopefully from behind the glass at the zoo.
For instance, a cockroach can live for a week without its head because they have an open circulatory system and little holes in each body segment that allows them to breathe despite losing a noggin. They only die following decapitation because they can’t drink water without a mouth.
Cockroaches are a serious health concern, and it’s important to address cockroaches should you have an infestation. Cockroaches spread diseases such as E. coli and Salmonella. They have also been linked to asthma and allergy attacks. With over 70 species of cockroaches in the United States, it is important to contact a pest control specialist as soon as their presence is apparent.
