Squirrels can be a difficult and persistent problem when they choose to make their nests in your home or yard. Parts of the United States are experiencing increased squirrel problems due to better than average acorn crops, and mild weather allowing for an extra litter of baby squirrels.
While New Mexico has not experienced the same population boom as other parts of the country, we do encounter difficult squirrel issues in our region. Unfortunately, squirrels are not only backyard nuisances. Often they find a way to enter homes and can cause extensive damage, usually in attics or crawl spaces. Squirrels may build nests which result in urine and droppings deposits. They can cause damage to homes at the entry points, including damaging siding, soffets, fascia boards, chimney flashing or exhaust fans. Squirrels often chew wires, which can be a serious fire hazard.
Tips on squirrel prevention include:
- Check the trees near your house
- Inspect the house for attic entry points and
- Avoid trapping a squirrel in the attic.
