Where do jumping spiders go to retire? Famous ones get to go to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Nefertiti, the first jumping spider to successfully return from space, made her home at the Smithsonian’s insect zoo last month.
The “Spidernaut” spent 100 days in space as part of a student experiment aboard the International Space Station. She was part of a YouTube Space Lab experiment proposed by Amr Mohamed, an Egytian student. Mohamed suggested determining if jumping spiders could adjust their hunting technique to weightlessness in space. In fact, “Neffi” was able to adjust her techniques and continue to catch prey in space. To read more about Nefertiti’s spider adventures, please visit USA Today.
