An unusual spider has been discovered in the Amazon Rain Forest in Peru. The spider builds large, elaborate decoy spiders and hangs them on its web as a defense against predators. The spider discovery is unusual in its genus, Cyclosa, because of the intricacy of the decoys. Most spiders in this genus that create decoys make clumpy constructions, not something lifelike.
The spider was discovered by Phil Torres, a biologist and science educator, who first thought the decoy was a dead spider. The “dead” spider caught his attention because it was moving.
According to arachnologist Linda Rayor of Cornell University, the new species will need to be confirmed though more observations. However, spiders building decoys with legs and the web-shaking behavior the spider exhibits are both traits that haven’t been previously reported.
While this spider discovery is amazing, local spiders can be more troublesome. Pest Defense Solutions is always ready to help you address spider problems. We recommend year-round pest management to eliminate seasonal infestations. Spraying prior to the spring season is particularly helpful in eliminating large outbreaks as the weather temperature increases.Cyclosa, Pest Control, Spider Control, Spiders
