For centuries, people in the Balkans have used a common local bean plant to eliminate bed bugs. Researchers replicating the folk remedy have found the treatment effective, but have so far been unable to develop a means of using the treatment on a larger scale.
The people of the Balkans use the leaves of a common species of kidney bean, Cimex lectularius, to capture the insects. The leaves are scattered on the floor by their beds at night, and then burned in the morning.
Researches filmed the bed bugs at night to discover that the bed bugs are captured in microscopic hairs on the surface of the leaves. The hairs pierce the bugs’ feet and the bed bugs are trapped to the leaves.
Researches tried to create artificial replicas of the lean leaves with synthetic hairs will sharp tips like the plants. The replicas were ineffective at capturing the bed bugs.
