The town of Santo Antonio de Platina in southern Brazil has recently experienced a spider explosion of mammoth proportions. Scientists are still trying to determine the type of spiders that created huge communal webs over the town, but say they appear to be a social species of spider. A resident of the town posted a video of thousands of the spiders on YouTube on February 8th.
The video shows webs as high as the trees and telephone lines with thousands of black spiders hanging from them. The resident, twenty-year-old web designer Erick Reis, discovered the spiders when he was leaving his friend’s house.
Scientists are also debating whether the webs are a temporary hunting ground or a permanent colony.
While New Mexico is not likely to experience a social colony of spiders, we do have many species that are native to our climate. Year-round pest control can prevent large infestations from occurring in your home.
