To determine how ants communicate and cooperate, researchers placed ant colonies in a controlled environment with different materials to travel over to reach their food source. The ants followed an angled path selecting smoother materials so that they reached the food in the least amount of time.
The reseachers think the ants’ pheromones trails help them to determine the fastest route. Pheromones are chemical trails the ants leave like paths for the other ants to follow.
