The newest tarantula from Sri Lanka is big news, not only because of the rarity of new species discoveries but also for this spider’s huge size. The tarantula is about the size of a dinner plate and is able to kill mice, lizards, small birds and snakes with its venom. Meet Poecilotheria rajaei.
The new tarantula has a leg span of 8 inches and it hairy with subtle markings of gray, pink and yellow. . It is a tree-dwelling spider, from the genus of arachnids Poecilotheria, commonly nicknamed “Pokies” or tiger spiders. All Pokies have been found only in India and Sri Lanka.
Thankfully, this oversized tarantula will not be making an appearance in New Mexico this spring. However, there are at least 35 species of spiders that do call New Mexico home according to Insect Identificaton, including venomous wolf spiders, black widows, and brown recluse spiders. As we welcome the warmer weather, you should expect that spiders will start making appearances as well.
