Pigeons are generally a nuisance that homeowners struggle to eradicate from their properties. However, this pigeon’s story is just too interesting not to share. A British military carrier pigeon, named 40TW194, was found years after its secret flight over France and its message has been sent to Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) listening post and decoding department. Its message may, or may not, be made public, depending on whether the message is still considered “secret” by the British military.
The bird’s skeleton was discovered in 1982 by David Martin at his home in Surrey. It had a red capsule on its leg that contained a coded message. The message was addressed to “X02” which is believed to be bomber command during World War II. Another pigeon also carried the same coded message, indicating the possible importance of the message for the war effort. Martin said that no one seemed interested in the message until recently when nearby Bletchley Park, Britain’s National Codes Cntre museum, began to look at its provenance.

Less “historical” pigeons can be a both damaging and unhealthy, and it is imperative to address pigeon issues on your property. Pigeons often nest on roofs where they damage the materials to the point of a roof leak. Pigeons carry diseases such as cryptococcosis, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella. Their droppings may harbor the growth of fungus which causes histoplasmosis. Other pests may live on these birds, including fleas, lice, mites, or ticks.
